Why convert audio?
Audio formats exist for different jobs, and the moment you move a file between apps the mismatch shows. A podcast host only accepts MP3. A streaming service or voice app wants Opus because it's efficient at low bitrates. A music-production project needs uncompressed WAV. An iPhone plays M4A most smoothly. A game or Discord bot expects OGG. A high-fidelity music store asks for FLAC. Converting is how you hand each destination the format it's built around.
The core divide is lossy versus lossless. Lossy codecs — MP3, AAC (in M4A), Opus, Vorbis (in OGG) — permanently discard the parts of the signal the ear is least likely to notice, trading a little fidelity for much smaller files. Lossless codecs — WAV and FLAC — keep every sample intact, so they sound identical to the master at the cost of size. This converter probes and decodes the input, then re-encodes to the target with sensible defaults so a single conversion sounds clean, all over an encrypted connection with the uploaded bytes discarded as soon as the result is sent back.

Understanding bitrate and quality
For lossy formats, bitrate is the main quality dial — it's how many kilobits per second the codec spends describing the sound. Higher means more detail and a bigger file. As rough guidance: 128 kbps MP3 is fine for spoken word and casual listening, 192 kbps is a solid middle ground, and 256–320 kbps is effectively transparent for music on most gear. Newer codecs are more efficient: Opus and AAC sound as good at a lower bitrate than MP3 needs. Lossless formats don't have a bitrate you set — they store the full signal, so quality is fixed at 'identical to source' and only the file size varies with how compressible the audio is.
